The District Chief Executive, Hon. Samuel Somuah, on Tuesday, 22nd September 2026, continued his community outreach with visits to the Nananom and residents of Nyameani, Asuonyunu, Enteho and Esreso. Addressing community members, the Hon. DCE expressed gratitude, on behalf of the President and on his own behalf, for their endorsement of the President's vision in the 2024 General Elections, and pledged government's commitment to fulfilling its promises through significant infrastructural development aimed at mitigating the socio-economic challenges confronting residents.
He took the opportunity to highlight recent government arrangements for the disbursement of the District Assembly's Common Fund to ensure targeted development, indicating that the Assembly would strictly adhere to these directives and do its utmost to address the socio-economic needs of residents. He underscored the need for residents to support the improvement of the Assembly's Internally Generated Fund, emphasising that an equal percentage of all funds generated through the various ceded revenue items allocated to the sub-structures for collection is returned to the communities to aid community self-aid projects.
Hon. Somuah also touched on major government initiatives, including the National Sanitation Day, a monthly day set aside for communal sanitation activities, and cautioned against animal rearers who fail to keep their animals in pens, causing them to stray into farms and gardens and destroy crops. He further addressed the menace of farm destruction by cattle belonging to nomadic herders, especially as the dry season approaches, charging Assembly Members and their Unit-Committees to ensure adherence to these directives. He called on community members to form watchdog groups to ward off the nomads and their cattle, assuring them of the Assembly's full support.
The engagements afforded the Hon. DCE the opportunity to respond to important concerns raised by Nananom and residents, including the deplorable state of community roads affecting socio-economic activities, crop destruction by stray animals, the establishment of electoral polling stations in some communities, government intervention for ready markets and good market value for farm produce, support for community self-aid projects, water challenges, the absence of electricity, the establishment of kindergarten schools, support for farmers, the commencement of the School Feeding Programme and youth unemployment.
In response, the Hon. DCE assured them of his commitment to addressing these concerns. He pledged the provision of mechanised boreholes in smaller communities and the extension of pipe-borne water to larger ones to address water challenges. He also assured community members of following up on earlier petitions by the Assembly to the Ministry of Energy for the extension of the ongoing Rural Electrification exercise to more communities, and pledged the Assembly's support towards the completion of some community self-aid projects.
On youth unemployment, Hon. Somuah encouraged the youth to take advantage of government's National Apprenticeship Programme to acquire a handskill to empower and establish them in an economic venture. He also informed residents of the Assembly's recruitment of revenue collectors on a commission basis and encouraged recent Basic and Senior High School leavers to apply for the opportunity to earn income while awaiting the continuation of their education.
As part of the engagements, officers of the Regional and District Information Services Department educated community members on the Free Primary Healthcare programme currently being piloted in the District, covering its importance, the various health services it covers, and encouraging registration to benefit from the initiative. The Hon. DCE also touched on the significance of the initiative, which was a pledge by the President to enhance basic healthcare, especially in rural districts, and admonished parents to register their babies to enable them acquire birth certificates.
Nananom and residents expressed profound gratitude to the Hon. DCE, the Central Government and the District Assembly for their spirited efforts in addressing their basic needs. They expressed hope in the fulfilment of these pledges and promised their support to the Assembly to ensure the attainment of development and progress for the District and its people.
