Earlier today, the Sekyere Central District Assembly has conducted its third quarter disbursement to Persons with Disability (PWDs), reinforcing its commitment to empowering vulnerable groups through targeted economic support.
The exercise, led by the Social Welfare and Community Development Department, benefited PWDs in the District which forms part of a broader initiative to promote economic independence among PWDs.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Head of the Department, Mr. Emmanuel Haruna explained that the programme is designed to empower beneficiaries based on their preferred social enterprises. The disbursements included work tools and cash donations to support successful beneficiaries in their various economic endeavours.
He noted that the Federation comprises three major subgroups; physically challenged persons, visually impaired persons, and deaf and dumb persons. He encouraged all PWDs in the District to register with one of these groupings.
The Federation President, Mr. Kwaku Tawiah in his remarks, urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the resources provided to improve their livelihoods and those of their families. He emphasised that cash donations given to caretakers for the needs of PWD children and adults must be used exclusively for the beneficiaries, adding that monitoring would be strengthened to ensure accountability.
The Chairperson of the Disability Fund Management Committee, Hon. Philip Agyei, expressed gratitude to the Central Government, the District Assembly, and the Hon. DCE for their continuous support and prioritisation of PWDs' needs through the consistent release of funds. He encouraged beneficiaries to utilise the items presented to them effectively to ensure the programme's success.
In his keynote address, Hon. Samuel Somuah conveyed the President's felicitations to the gathering and reaffirmed the Mahama-led administration's commitment to the welfare of PWDs. He highlighted the visible improvement in the programme through prompt disbursement of resources and an increase in the percentage allocation for PWDs in the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).
Hon. Somuah disclosed that a total of 117 beneficiaries have been recorded since he assumed office and assured that the initiative would continue to seek significant progress in the coming years. He charged caregivers of PWD beneficiaries to desist from misappropriating funds meant for their beneficiaries, while thanking members for their continuous support and encouraging others to remain hopeful as they would also benefit soon.
The disbursement exercise underscores the Assembly's resolve to foster inclusive development and economic self-reliance among PWDs. By providing both tools and financial resources, the programme is expected to create sustainable livelihoods, enhance the dignity of beneficiaries, and contribute to the broader vision of government for an empowered and equitable society.
