World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5, is the United Nations’ flagship initiative for promoting global awareness and action on environmental protection. Established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 and first held in 1973, the day serves as the world’s largest platform for public environmental outreach, mobilizing individuals, communities, governments, and corporations to tackle pollution, climate change, biodiversity loss, and waste.
In commemoration of this year’s World Environment Day, the District Office of the Forestry Commission, in collaboration with the Sekyere Central District Assembly and Nsutaman Catholic Senior High School, organized a tree planting exercise. The initiative aligns with the Commission’s broader “Tree for Life” reforestation campaign, which aims to plant approximately three million trees in the Ashanti region this year.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Yaw Boateng Asante, District Director of the Forestry Commission, highlighted the adverse effects of climate change on the environment and underscored the critical role of tree planting in addressing these challenges. He noted that Nsutaman Catholic SHS is one of only two schools selected in the Ashanti Region for this collaborative exercise, which seeks to improve tree cover, enhance environmental conditions, and mitigate boundary encroachment.
Mr. Asante further urged the school’s management and students to take an active role not only in planting trees but also in ensuring their proper nurturing to maturity. He stressed that sustained care is essential for the long-term success of the reforestation effort.
The District Chief Executive, Hon. Samuel Somuah, echoed these sentiments, encouraging students to fully participate in the exercise and to nurture the seedlings into mature trees. He remarked that the students would be remembered for years to come, not only for beautifying their school but also for contributing meaningfully to the ecosystem. He called on all students to heed the clarion call of safeguarding the environment, emphasizing the vital importance of trees to human life.
Mrs. Victoria Ussher, Headmistress of Nsutaman Catholic SHS, expressed gratitude to the Forestry Commission for selecting the school. She assured the Commission of the school’s full commitment to the initiative, pledging active participation from both students and teachers in ensuring the trees are properly nurtured.
The event concluded with a demonstrative tree planting ceremony led by the DCE, the District Coordinating Director, the District Director of the Forestry Commission, the Headmistress, and the students. The occasion was graced by technical staff of the Forestry Commission, Honorable Assembly Members, teachers, and students of Nsutaman Catholic SHS.
